Misty Mountains & Biting Flies: Our Quick Trip through New Hampshire

Well, it was finally time to say goodbye to one of our new favorite places: Maine.

We loaded up the car, said goodbye to (overpriced but delicious) lobster rolls and (fairly-priced and even more delicious) blueberry pie and turned left away from the coastline for the first time in a week.

As we drove through the interior of Maine, we simply could not resist the northeastern urge any longer: we stopped at a Dunkies (do people in Maine even call it that or is that just a Boston thing? Inquiring minds want to know.).

After loading up on the only coffee and donuts that the northern states will even consider an option, we powered through on our drive until we had crossed over into our 45th U.S. state of New Hampshire.

The windshield wipers intensified as we climbed in elevation and the flatlands gave way to gorgeous pine-covered mountains. This drive did nothing to help put my desire to see New Hampshire and Vermont in the fall at bay. Do you hear that, Phil? Sounds like another road trip is brewing!

After making a few stops to drink up the gorgeous misty mountain and waterfall views, we pulled into our campsite at the top of the White Mountains.

Phil ran into the office to check in. As I waited in the car, it dawned on me that Camper Rav was swarmed…by hundreds of little gnats. We were welcomed by the state bird of New Hampshire: the biting black fly.

I read several articles about the extreme nuisance caused by these little buggers during two weeks of the calendar year. We were visiting smack dab in the middle of black fly season. Lucky us!

With long-sleeves and long pants, we were able to keep the black flies at bay & enjoyed our time for a stopover in the White Mountains with gorgeous walks and mountain drives. The scenery was incredible and we can’t wait to return to the area when the foliage is in bloom.

Our trip was too short, but a change to the itinerary was now leading us out of the country to a new city we had never visited before…Montreal!
