On the Road Again…to Niagara Falls!
We came home from our trip out West for a very important reason: to plant our garden. OH and to meet our new niece, Reese June!
After plenty of adorable baby snuggles (& the launch of a very important website…ahem), we were on the road again with our compasses pointing northward. We were heading to Maine and we had several other destinations in mind along the way!
Our first destination was a place that I had not visited since I was in 8th grade. No need to count the years there - just know it was a long time ago (in a galaxy far, far away). We pulled in to the Niagara Falls State Park parking lot early in the day, ready to explore.
It didn’t take long before we reached the first set of rapids, to which Phil proudly exclaimed “Wow - Niagara Falls is way smaller than I thought it would be!” After pausing to give my best eye roll, we were off to the big kahuna.
We reached the largest of the falls, Horseshoe Falls, which were mostly shrouded by mist (giving it a bit of mist-ery if you will…listen Phil can only take so much & I have a willing audience…) making them difficult to see, but did not detract from the magnitude of just how large the falls truly are. In April, we both loved visiting Idaho’s Shoshone Falls because we were able to take in every detail of the roaring waterfall. While this is not the case at Horseshoe Falls, the sheer width of the falls & amount of water flowing over them are absolutely mind-blowing.
As we walked around the waterfront, we soaked up the views of Bridal Veil Falls & American Falls (the two other waterfalls that make up the Niagara trio). These waterfalls are smaller than Horseshoe Falls, but have less mist, giving visitors a different view of Niagara!
When we stopped by the gift shop, I was pleasantly greeted by an embroidered FC Cincinnati jacket. I strategically planned my move around the shop to “run into” the owner of the jacket & chat with him about our shared fandom of FC Cincinnati, 8 hours away from the city! Ten minutes later, Phil overheard the man telling his family, “I just met another FC Cincinnati fan who complimented my jacket!” My work here is done.
On my last venture to Niagara, we visited the Canadian side of the falls which provided a better direct view of the waterfalls. That being said, I actually enjoyed my time on the New York side of the falls more! Niagara Falls State Park is filled with the headwater rapids that lead to Niagara and are beautiful in their own right. The park is nicely curated with lush greenery and well-maintained walking & cycling paths. Plus, we saw the most adorable gosling waddling around who was very enamored by the tourists walking down the trail. Needless to say, I was hooked.
I guess Phil isn’t the only bird fiend after all.
Next Stop: the Catskills and boy do we have a story for you!
